Gary Schmidt

Gary W. Schmidt, 70, of Oostburg passed away on Tuesday, June 14, 2016 at Aurora Sheboygan Memorial Medical Center. Gary was born on October 16, 1945 in Manitowoc to Alfred and Gwendolyn (Lippert) Schmidt. He was a 1963 graduate of Lincoln High School in Manitowoc. He served his country in the US Army from 1963-1966. After returning from the service he attended the Manitowoc County Teachers College, Silver Lake College and graduating with a Master's Degree from UW Milwaukee. On June 28, 1969 he married Janice Bauer in Manitowoc. Gary was a 4th grade teacher at Oostburg Elementary from 1971 until his retirement in 2005. Gary was a member of Blessed Trinity Parish in Sheboygan Falls where he served as an usher. He was a volunteer at St. Vincent De Paul and enjoyed selling tickets for high school sporting events. Gary enjoyed his monthly dinners with OREO (Oostburg Retired Educators Organization). Gary was an avid reader and sports fan and loved watching the Brewers, Packers, Badgers, Marquette, and all of the Oostburg athletic events. He enjoyed playing golf and cards, especially sheepshead and cribbage and had fond memories of the many trips that he and Janice took with friends. Gary is survived by his wife of 46 years, Janice; two sons, Mark (Stephanie) Schmidt of Perkinston, MS and Jeff (Jessica) Schmidt of Hingham; three grandchildren, Ashton, David and Ella; one sister, Diane (Ted) Gieryn; three brothers, David (Cathy) Schmidt, Dan (Sue) Schmidt and Glenn Schmidt; one sister and brother-in-law, Ruth and Jerry Hauch. He is further survived by nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. Gary was preceded in death by his parents and father and mother-in-law, Victor and Elsie Bauer. A memorial mass will be held on Friday, June 17, 2017 at 6pm at Blessed Trinity Parish in Sheboygan Falls with Rev. Dan Lasecki officiating. Relatives and friends may greet the family on Friday, June 17, 2016 at the church from 2pm until the time of service at 6pm. A memorial to Oostburg Elementary School and the Vince Lombardi Cancer Clinic is being established in Gary's name.
