Gary DeSmith

Gary L. DeSmith, 66, of 1103 Center Avenue, Oostburg died at his home on Thursday, April 14, 2011. Gary was born on May 6, 1944 in Sheboygan, the son of the late Lloyd and Anna (Klompenhouwer) DeSmith. He attended Oostburg High School. On June 13, 1970 he married Donna Brock in Cedar Grove. Gary worked in the maintenance department at Wilman Industries in Cedar Grove for 15 years before his retirement in 2006. Previously he worked with his brothers at DeSmith Service Station and Dirkse Oil Co. as a mechanic, and at Dutchland Plastics. Gary was a member of the First Presbyterian Church in Oostburg. He served as a volunteer fireman with the Oostburg Fire Dept and was part of the heavy duty rescue team. He enjoyed anything to do with cars, collected miniature cars, watching NASCAR, the Green Bay Packers, and Milwaukee Brewers. He was fond of his grandchildren and enjoyed spending time with them. Gary enjoyed sweets and his four daily cigarettes. His family will miss Gary's sense of humor and contagious DeSmith laugh. Gary is survived by his wife, Donna; one daughter, Theresa (James) VanStelle of Oostburg; one son, Christopher (Kim) DeSmith of Oostburg; four grandchildren, Kimberly, Ashlee, and Kevin VanStelle, and Zachariah DeSmith; one brother, Robert (Mary) DeSmith of Kentwood, Michigan; three sisters-in-law, Harriet DeSmith of Oostburg, Muriel DeSmith of Decorah, Iowa, and Gloria (Tim) Friedel of Sheboygan; two brothers-in-law, Paul Harmeling of Oostburg and Allan Risseeuw of Cedar Grove; and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, three sisters, an infant, and Peg Harmeling and Judy Risseeuw; and three brothers, Eugene (Liz), Audley, and Roger DeSmith. Funeral services to celebrate Gary's life will be held at the First Presbyterian Church in Oostburg on Saturday, April 16, 2001 at Noon with the Rev. Brian Jacobson officiating. Friends may greet the family at the First Presbyterian Church on Saturday from 10 am until the time of the service at Noon.
