Frederick Oppeneer

Fred J. Oppeneer, 84, of 120 South 7th Street, Oostburg died on Saturday morning, July 23, 2011 at St. Nicholas Hospital where he had been a patient since Thursday. Fred was born on November 11, 1926 in Oostburg, the son of the late Melvin and Elsie (Walvoort) Oppeneer. Fred graduated from Sheboygan Central High School in 1945. He served in the US Army Air Force from 1945-47. On October 22, 1948 he married Audrey Brusse in Oostburg. Fred was co-owner of the Oppeneer-Smies General Contractors for 42 years before his retirement in 1991. Fred was a member of the First Christian Reformed Church in Oostburg where he served as a deacon and elder. Fred served as general contractor for the building of the present church. He also served on the Board of Directors for the Union Cemetery in the Town of Holland, the Oostburg Christian School and the Sheboygan County Christian High School. Fred was instrumental in the formation and construction of the Sheboygan County Christian High School. He enjoyed fishing, gardening, traveling, the Green Bay Packers, Milwaukee Brewers, and attending his grandchildren's activities. Fred is survived by his wife of 62 years, Audrey; a daughter, Susan (Rick) Walber of Minonk, Illinois; two sons, Tom Oppeneer of Torrington, Wyoming and Steve (Kathy) Oppeneer of Hingham; eleven grandchildren, Eric and Kathryn Walber, Sarah (Steve) Mueller, John (Tonia) Oppeneer, Liz (Luke) Johns, Martha and Anne Oppeneer, Dan (Lisa) Oppeneer, Michelle (Damon) Huibregtse, Joel (Sheila) and Mike (Michelle) Oppeneer; and seven great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by one sister, Helen (Robert) Nyenhuis and one brother, Daniel Oppeneer. Funeral services to celebrate Fred's life will be held at the First Christian Reformed Church in Oostburg on Tuesday, July 26, 2011 at 1 pm with the Rev. Dr. Les Kuiper officiating. Burial will follow at Union Cemetery. Friends may call at the First Christian Reformed Church in Oostburg on Monday from 4-7 pm, and on Tuesday from noon until the time of the service at 1 pm.
