Eugene Soerens

Eugene J. Soerens, 85, formerly of Cedar Grove, passed away on Wednesday morning, February 4, 2015, at Meadowview Manor in Sheboygan, where he had been since 2005. Eugene was born on March 21, 1929, in the Town of Holland, to John and Lizzie (Oonk) Soerens. He attended local grade schools and Oostburg High School. On May 26, 1950, he married Elaine Debbink in the Town of Lima. Elaine passed away on December 5, 2009. In 1957 Eugene and Elaine bought an 80 acre farm on GW in the town of Holland, where they did cash-cropping. Eugene was employed in production and maintenance at Bemis Manufacturing for 40 years until his retirement in 1992. Eugene was a member of First Reformed Church in Oostburg. Eugene was on a bowling league for many years and also enjoyed riding his motorcycle. Eugene was a quiet, hard-working, honest man with a dry sense of humor. He had a bond to the land and loved to watch the crops grow. His sons learned many practical lessons from watching him. Eugene is survived by his four sons, Roy (Kathy) Soerens of Iron Ridge, Dale (Gail) Soerens of Oostburg, Roger (Sherry) Soerens of Sheboygan and David (Arlinda) Soerens of Fond Du Lac; four grandsons, Ross (Abbie) Soerens, Sean (Laura) Brace, Cody Brace and Colin (Amber) Cody; four great-grandchildren, Bryanna Brace, Kloe Brace, Brayden Cody and Carson Cody; three sisters-in-law, Lois (Sam) Brill of Oostburg, Joan (Bill) Pierce of Shawano, and Carla (Rev. Ivan) DeMaster of Sheboygan. He is further survived by other relatives and friends. Eugene was preceded in death by his wife of 59 years, Elaine, his sister, Dorothy (George) Ver Velde, his brother, Leon and an infant brother, Earl. A funeral service to celebrate Eugene's life will be held at 5pm on Friday, February 6, 2015 at the Wenig Funeral Home in Oostburg with Rev. Brian Taylor officiating. Burial will take place at Sunrise Memorial Gardens in the Town of Wilson. Relatives and friends may call at the funeral home on Friday, February 6, 2015 from 3pm until the time of service at 5pm. A memorial fund has been established in Eugene's name.
