Eugene "Gene" A. Povalski, 88, of Sheboygan Falls, passed away on Sunday, December 2, 2012, at St. Nicholas Hospital in Sheboygan. Gene was born on December 6, 1923, in Menominee, MI, son of Leo and Adelaide (Valier) Povalski. He graduated from Menominee High School in 1942 and from Michigan Technological University with a degree in Mechanical Engineering in 1950. Eugene served in the US Navy during WWII aboard the aircraft carrier USS Franklin. He was awarded the Silver Star, Purple Heart, Philippine Liberation Medal, Asiatic Pacific Campaign Medal, and the WWII Victory Medal. On November 27, 1947 he married Loretta Freiberg at St. Cecelia Church in Hubbell, Michigan. Loretta passed away on May 8, 2012. Gene was employed in the engineering department at the Kohler Company in Kohler, WI for 39 years and a proud member of the Quarter Century Club. He retired in 1991. Gene was a member of St. John Evangelist Catholic Church in Kohler from 1951 until the time of his passing. He was past president of the Holy Name Society and a former member of the Usher group. Gene was a lifelong member of the 4th Degree Knights of Columbus - Assembly 1204. He was a member of the USS Franklin Museum, Disabled American Veterans, Sheboygan Elks, American Society of Engineers, and the Order of the Purple Heart. Gene is survived by his son, Mark (Varangrat) Povalski of Vadnais Heights, MN; three sisters-in-law, Marjorie Freiberg of Mishicot, Marion (Robert) Rose of Green Bay and Jewel Dahlstrom of Ontonagon, MI; two brother-in-laws, Joseph Freiberg of Kohler and Lionel (Elaine) Freiberg of Port Charlotte, FL. Eugene is also survived by numerous nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. Gene was preceded in death by his parents; his wife of 64 years, Loretta; one daughter, Sheryl Povalski; one brother, James (Irene) Povalski; two sisters-in-law, Joan Freiberg and Theresa Bettens; and one brother-in-law, Lawrence Freiberg. To celebrate Gene's life, Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11:00 am on Wednesday, December 5, 2012, at St. John Evangelist Catholic church in Kohler with Rev. Bob Lotz officiating. Interment with military honors will take place in Woodland Cemetery in Kohler. Relatives and friends may call at the church on Wednesday from 10:00 am until the time of Mass at 11:00 am. In lieu of flowers, a memorial fund has been established in Gene's name for the American Cancer Society.
