Eugene L. Oppeneer, 89, formerly of Hingham died on Sunday morning, August 31, 2008 at Pine Haven Residential Home in Sheboygan Falls where he and his wife have resided since October. Eugene was born on March 9, 1919 in the Town of Holland, the son of the late Alva and Jane (Harrison) Oppeneer. Eugene graduated from Oostburg High School in 1937. He served in the US Army during World War II in the South Pacific. On June 20, 1942, Eugene married the former Verna Augustine in Sheboygan. He was a dairy farmer in the Town of Lima for many years. Eugene was a lifelong member of the Hingham Reformed Church as well as the American Legion Hingham Post. Eugene was also a member of the Wisconsin Bird and Game Breeders, Illinois Pet and Game Breeders, American Pheasant and Water Fowl Society, Sheboygan Lakeshore Pigeon Club, and American Carneaux Club. He served as Poultry Superintendent of the Sheboygan County Fair Assoc, and was a longtime leader of the Hingham Handy Helpers 4-H Club. He enjoyed breeding and raising domestic and wild poultry, water fowl, birds, gardening, and going to swap meets. He is survived by his wife, Verna, of Pine Haven; two daughters, Kathy (Elwood) Wynveen of Sheboygan Falls, Carol (Skip) Van Driest of Oostburg; three sons, Ralph (Lynne) Oppeneer of Cascade, Mark (Faye) Oppeneer of Sheboygan Falls, and Keith (Jackie) Oppeneer of Sheboygan; 14 grandchildren; 19 great grandchildren; and one sister, Mary Jane Oppeneer of Plymouth. Eugene was preceded in death by his parents; one sister, Esther Oppeneer; and an infant brother Harrison Oppeneer. A funeral service will take place at the Wenig Funeral Home in Oostburg at 7 pm on Wednesday, September 3, 2008 with the Rev. Steven J. Bakker officiating. Burial will take place at Hingham Cemetery. Friends may greet the family at the Wenig Funeral Home in Oostburg on Wednesday from 4 pm until the time of the service at 7 pm.
