Esther Waal

Esther Vander Waal, 88, of Oostburg, went to be with her Lord on Thursday, September 2, 2010 at her home. Esther was born on August 15, 1922 in the Town of Wilson, daughter of Walter and Jennie (VerVelde) Davies. She was a 1940 graduate of Oostburg High School. On August 5, 1942 she married William Vander Waal in the Town of Wilson. William preceded her in death on June 25, 1992. Esther was a member of Bethel Orthodox Presbyterian Church in Oostburg. She was also a member of the Rebekah Society. She was the site manager at the Oostburg Senior Center for 17 years. Esther enjoyed her house plants, birdwatching, sewing, camping, traveling and spending time with her family. Esther is survived by four daughters, Joan (Ronald) Walvoord of Cedar Grove, Phyllis (Wayne) Heideman of Lake Zurich, IL, Linda (Paul) Van Ess of Plymouth and Patricia Vander Waal of London; one son, Wayne (Sharon) Vander Waal of Oostburg; 14 grandchildren, Wendy (Dave) Kuipers, Lauri (Tim) Kooiman, Vicki (Dave) Garside, Rhonda (Chris) Kingma, Erin (Joel) Mentink, Derrick (Joe'l) Vander Waal, Troy (Sanna) Vander Waal, Brian (Roseena) Vander Waal, Gail, Dawn, and Todd Heideman, Jana (Fernando) Reyero Noya, Stacie and Ryan Van Ess; 22 great-grandchildren; four sisters-in-law, Jeanette Davies of Oostburg, Olive Davies of Holland, MI, Shirley Vander Waal of Oostburg and Marie Vander Waal of Sheboygan, and special friend Reuben Arentsen of Hingham. Esther is also survived by nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. Esther was preceded in death by her parents, her husband William, two sisters, Gertrude (Robert) TenPas and Henrietta (Edwin) Wynveen, five brothers, John (Hermima), Henry, Oliver (Edith), Lincoln (Gertrude), Arthur, and two brothers-in-law John and Arthur Vander Waal. Funeral services will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Tuesday, September 7, 2010 at Bethel OPC in Oostburg with the Rev. John Tinsley officiating. Private burial will take place on Tuesday morning before the service in Hartman Cemetery in the Town of Wilson. Relatives and friends may call from 4-8 p.m. on Monday, September 6, 2010 at the Wenig Funeral Home in Oostburg and from 12:00 p.m. until the time of the service Tuesday at the church. A memorial fund has been established in Esther's name for the Oostburg Christian School and the Youth Ministry at Bethel OPC.
