Estelle Harmeling

Estelle "Sally" M. Harmeling, 85, of Oostburg, took Jesus' hand on Monday, April 11, 2016, at her home, surrounded by her children. Sally was born on November 13, 1930, in Oostburg, daughter of Jacob J. Sr. and Alice (Hartman) Verhelst. She was a 1948 graduate of Oostburg High School. On June 4, 1949, she married Benjamin Harmeling in Oostburg. Benjamin passed away on October 9, 1986. Sally was employed as a nursing assistant, first at Heritage Nursing Home, and then at St. Nicholas Hospital in Sheboygan. Sally was a member of First Reformed Church in Oostburg. She enjoyed Bridge, dominos, and word puzzles, had an interest in politics, and especially enjoyed spending time with her grandchildren and family. Sally is survived by her three daughters, Jill (Jerry) Weavers, Jody (Jack) VanEss, and Jana (Peter) Scheppmann, all of Oostburg; her two sons, Rev. Jeffrey (Mary) Harmeling of Grand Junction, CO and Jack Harmeling of Oostburg; twelve grandchildren, Jeffrey Weavers, Julie (Matt) Conard, Jonathan (Kami) VanEss, Jay (Jill) VanEss, Justin (Tracy) VanEss, Jordan (Shannon) VanEss, Damian, Cole, and Benjamin Scheppmann, Mindy (Jaime) Abraham, Michael (Cassie) Harmeling, and Daven (Haley) Harmeling; 20 great-grandchildren; one sister, Phyllis Christian of Oostburg; three sisters-in-law, Lila Verhelst of Appleton, Tanya Verhelst of Oostburg, and Joan (Earl) Herring of Brillion; and one brother-in-law, Don (Kathleen) Harmeling of Waterford. Sally was preceded in death by her husband of 37 years, Benjamin; two sisters, Dorothy (James) Wykhuis and Alma (Bob) Huibregtse; and four brothers, Donald, Carroll (Joan), Jack, and Stanley (Barb) Verhelst. A funeral service to celebrate Sally's life will be held at 10:30 am on Friday, April 15, 2016, at the Wenig Funeral Home in Oostburg with Rev. Brian Taylor officiating. Burial will take place at Hartman Cemetery in the Town of Wilson. Relatives and friends may gather at the funeral home on Thursday, April 14, 2016, from 4:00 to 7:00 pm and also on Friday from 9:30 am until the time of the service at 10:30 am. A memorial fund has been established in Sally's name for Samaritan's Hand and for the food pantry and televised services at First Reformed Church of Oostburg.
