Ernest "Dick" R. Kunert, 82, of Plymouth, passed away on Tuesday, December 18, 2012 at Rocky Knoll Health Care Center. Dick was born on May 7, 1930, in Milwaukee, son of Ernest and Alice (Keasling) Kunert. Dick served in the US Army from 1951-1953, during the Korean Conflict. He was a 1947 graduate of West Division High School, and attended UW-Madison, where he received his Master's degree in library service. On August 16, 1986 he married Mary Deeley-Johnston in Sheboygan. Dick was employed as Library Director for the Mead Public Library in Sheboygan for 28 years until his retirement in 1991. As director, he oversaw construction of the current Mead Public Library in 1974. In 1986, the library was selected as one of the 50 outstanding libraries in the United States. Dick loved his family, traveling, and reading. He enjoyed his computer, doing research, and playing games. Dick is survived by his wife of 26 years, Mary; two daughters, Roberta (William) May of Sheboygan and Leslie (William) Smith of Bossier City, LA; four sons, Richard (Brenda Spychalla) Kunert of Madison, James (Michelle) Kunert of Oklahoma City, OK, Bret Johnston of Norwalk, CA, and Bart (Barbara) Johnston of Lawton, OK; four grandchildren; three great-grandchildren, and mother-in-law, Mary Deeley of Sheboygan Falls. Dick is also survived by nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. Dick was preceded in death by his parents; two sisters, Hazel and Helen; and three brothers, Robert, Raymond, and Harold. A private family memorial service to celebrate Dick's life will be held at the Wenig Funeral Home in Sheboygan Falls with Rev. Dan Volkert officiating. A memorial fund has been established in Dick's name.
