Ellsworth I. VerGowe, 84, of N3151 School Street, Sheboygan Falls (Gibbsville) died at his home on Christmas Day, December 25, 2009. Ellsworth was born on June 22, 1925 in the Town of Lima, the son of the late Isaac and Minnie (Hoftiezer) VerGowe. Ellsworth attended Hillcrest School. Ellsworth served our country with the US Navy in the Pacific during World War II. He married Edith Damkot in Gibbsville on June 30, 1948. Ellsworth worked at Richardson Bros Furniture Co. in Sheboygan Falls for 41 years before his retirement in 1988. Following his retirement he began to work at Pine Haven Christian Home doing maintenance work. He was a lifelong member at Gibbsville Reformed Church where he served as an usher and greeter. He was also a member of the American Legion - Hartman Lammers Post and was a Boy Scout leader. He enjoyed woodworking, fishing, gardening, darthball, playing cards and games. He was an accomplished ice skater. Ellsworth was a very generous person and was "grandpa" to many children outside of his natural family. He had a good sense of humor and enjoyed many practical jokes....both given and received. He cherished the times he could spend with his family and friends. He is survived by his wife of 61 years, Edith; three daughters, Bev (friend Joe Selinski) Dulmes of Hingham, Carol (Greg) Steindl of Oostburg and Joan (Greg) Larson of Sheboygan; one son, Roger (Suzette) VerGowe of Howards Grove; eight grandchildren, Joe (Jenni) Steindl, Jacque, Joe (Beckie), and Jerica Cavanaugh, Joshua and Sarah Larson, Brent and Nikki VerGowe; three great grandchildren, Addilyn Cavanaugh, Alexandria and Alizae Steindl; and one brother-in-law, John (Edith) Damkot of Oostburg. Ellsworth was preceded in death by a son-in-law, Vonley Dulmes; and a brother, Howard (Marjorie) VerGowe. A celebration of Ellsworth's life will take place at the Gibbsville Reformed Church with a funeral service held at 10:30 am on Tuesday, December 29, 2009 with the Rev. Dr Albert Vander Meer officiating. A family service will be held at 10:15 am in the choir room. Burial will take place at Union Cemetery in the Town of Holland. Friends may greet the family at the Wenig Funeral Home in Oostburg on Monday from 4-8 pm, and on Tuesday, at church, from 9:30 am until the time of the service at 10:30 am.
