Eleanor Mentink

June 3, 1931 — April 28, 2013

Eleanor Eileen Mentink, 81, of Oostburg, went home to be with the Lord on Sunday, April 28, 2013. Eleanor was born June 3, 1931 to John and Nellie (Van Haveren) Wondergem in Sheboygan, WI. She graduated from Sheboygan North High School in 1949. Eleanor worked at H.C. Prange Co. prior to her marriage to Stuart Mentink. Eleanor and Stuart were married on June 4, 1952. Stuart adored Eleanor and she was a devoted wife and mother. During and after raising eight children, Eleanor demonstrated her great love for children as she was a Cub Scout leader, worked at the RCS Daycare, Children's Social Service Society, with the Friendship Club in Oostburg and Foster Grandparent Program at Jackson School as well as the Kid's Hope USA Program in Oostburg. Eleanor was a member of the First Reformed Church where she sang in the church choir, taught Sunday school for over 30 years, was a youth group leader, a member of the Prayer Circle and a Bible Study group as well. Eleanor's hobbies included puzzles, sewing, walking, bike riding, yard work, playing games and watching basketball. She was a strong advocate for her beliefs and had a passion for kids who were experiencing difficulties in their life. Eleanor is survived by her sons Lance, Scott (Carol), Kendal (Lori), Jay (Sue), and Christopher (Michelle) Mentink, Wosen (Corey) Gizaw and Hiroshi (Tomoko) Yamakawa and daughters Melissa (Tim) Kildea and Nancy Vander Jagt. Eleanor is survived by her grandchildren Angela (John) Raasch, Eric (Heidi) Mentink, Cara (Peter) Hilbelink, Gail (Tim) Stokdyk, Beth Mentink, Jaycob (Marisa) Mentink, Matthew (Sadie) Mentink, Taylor, Maranda and Collin Kildea, Zachery and Isaiah Mentink, Jeremiah Mentink, Zedekis Gizaw and Kaita Yamakawa. Eleanor is survived by 5 great grandchildren and was looking forward to the birth of two great grandsons this summer. Eleanor is also survived by her sisters Edith Hesselink, Eloise Riemersma, Evonne (Dr. Roderick) Kreuzer, and sister-in-laws Lee (Ken) Simmelink, Judith (Dale) Brasser, and Linda (Paul) Vander Weele. Eleanor was preceded in death by her husband Stuart on March 21, 1994, infant son Christopher John, two great grandchildren, parents, parents-in-law, and brother-in-laws Derwin Hesselink and Albert Riemersma. Funeral services to celebrate Eleanor's life will be held at 1:00 pm on Thursday, May 2, 2013, at First Reformed Church in Oostburg with Rev. Wayne DeVrou officiating. Interment will take place in Oostburg Cemetery. Relatives and friends may call at the Wenig Funeral Home in Oostburg on Wednesday from 4:00 until 8:00 pm and also one hour prior to the service at church. A memorial fund has been established in Eleanor's name.
