Duane Schwartz

February 15, 1923 — July 30, 2015

Duane G. Schwartz, 92, of Oostburg and formerly of Monroe passed away on Thursday, July 30, 2015 at his home. Duane was born on February 15, 1923 in Milwaukee to Arden and Clara (Steinmann) Schwartz. On July 3, 1948 he married Esther Schuetz in Monroe, WI. She preceded him in death on February 14, 2012. Duane farmed and worked construction until his retirement. For many years Duane was a member of the Monroe and Milwaukee Swiss Turners, where he made many lifelong friends. In his younger years he was a fierce boxer and wrestler, winning multiple trophies and awards. Duane had a great sense of humor. He was a jokester who enjoyed playing tricks on the kids, especially when it came to his missing right index finger. He loved the time he spent visiting family and his dear friends. Duane was dedicated to health and fitness and despite his age you would often see him walking around carrying his weights and counting his steps. Duane is survived by his three daughters, Kathryn (Don Sutherland) Schwartz of Ohio, Heidi (Al) Hess of Sheboygan and Diane Kanz of Oklahoma; one son, Richard (Janine) Schwartz of Florida; one daughter-in-law, Penny Schwartz of Sheboygan; ten grandchildren, Shelly (Kerry) Buchanan, Jamie (Todd) Thomas, Anne (Jake) Sander, Melissa (Terry) Hogan, Darrel (Tammy McKay) Kanz, Derrick (Bridget) Kanz, Leah (Rob Alamillo) Hess, Trisha Hess, Tracy Hess and Kelly (Scott) Mohs; fourteen great grandchildren; two sisters, Ellen Straubhaar and Jeannine Ziemer; one brother, Richard (Carol) Schwartz; two sisters-in-law, Evelyn Ritschard and Doris (George) Norton. He is further survived by nieces, nephews, other relatives and many dear friends, especially Jack and Fran Grandlic who always made time to take Duane out for a ride or to get a bite to eat. Duane's family would also like to thank the Ziemer family for all they did for Duane. Duane was preceded in death by his wife of 63 years, Esther; his son, Steven; parents, and brothers and sisters. Dad, we can still see you riding on your mower cutting the grass. A time for family and friends to gather will be on Wednesday, August 26, 2015 at the Wenig Funeral Home in Oostburg from 11-12:30pm. A memorial fund to Sharon S. Richardson Community Hospice in Duane's name is being established.
