Duane B. DuMez, 78, of 834 Michigan Avenue, Oostburg went to celebrate Easter with his risen Lord early on Saturday morning, April 3, 2010 while at his home. Duane was born on June 28, 1931 in Cedar Grove, the son of the late Bernard and Beatrice (Dirkse) DuMez. He graduated from Oostburg High School in 1949 and then proudly served his country in the US Air Force from 1949-51. On June 19, 1953 he married Yvonne Mulder in Oostburg. Duane was a line repairman for GTE/Verizon for 40 years before his retirement in 1993. Duane was an active longtime member of the First Christian Reformed Church in Oostburg where he served as an elder, several terms on consistory, was in the Men's Bible Study, and sang in the choir. He and Vonnie were active volunteers with the Christian Reformed World Relief Committee / Disaster Recovery Service for 13 years, during which time he served on various boards and was the site and area manager. He was past president of the Oostburg School Board, was a member of the Oostburg Kiwanis Club, American Legion Hartman Lammers Post where he served as past commander, the Dordt College Board and Friends of Dordt College. Duane served as a fireman and first responder in Oostburg for over 25 years and sang with the Pine Havens Men's Chorus. Duane was an active volunteer with Aurora Sheboygan Memorial Medical Center, Salvation Army, Big Brothers/Big Sisters, the Lunch Buddy program and the advisory board of the Network Health Insurance Co. He was a WIAA official for basketball, baseball and football. In 1995 Duane was a successful recipient of a heart transplant and became a designated speaker for the Wisconsin Donor Association. Duane enjoyed sports spectating, reading, and attending his grandchildren's activities. He is survived by his wife of 56 years, Yvonne "Vonnie"; two daughters, Susan (Ralph) Slaber of Brookfield, Christine (Kenneth) Geleynse of Randolph; two sons, Duane M. "Butch" (Jill) DuMez of Oostburg, Craig (Joann) DuMez of Brookfield; fifteen grandchildren; three great grandchildren; three sisters, Marilyn (Keith) Brill, Jane (Duane) LeBreck, both of Oostburg, and SueAnn (Arthur) Dulmes of Sheboygan Falls; two brothers, L. Don (Mary Lou) DuMez and Michael (Jean) DuMez, both of Oostburg; one sister-in-law, Gail (Glenn) Meerdink of Cedar Grove; and one brother-in-law, Philip (Claudia) Mulder of Phoenix, AZ. A celebration of Duane's life will take place at a funeral service to be held at the First Christian Reformed Church in Oostburg on Saturday, April 10, 2010 at 1:30 pm with the Rev. Dr. Les Kuiper officiating. A family service will take place in the fellowship hall at 1:15 pm. Burial and military honors will follow at Hartman Cemetery in the Town of Wilson. Friends may call at the Wenig Funeral Home in Oostburg on Friday from 4-8 pm, and on Saturday, at church, from noon until the time of the service.
