Dorothy M. Ver Velde, 84, formerly of Oostburg, went to her heavenly home on Wednesday night, March 14, 2007 at Cedar Grove Gardens where she had resided since June. She was born May 6, 1922 in the Town of Lima, the daughter of the late John and Lizzie (Oonk) Soerens. Dorothy was a 1940 graduate of Oostburg High School. On April 10, 1941, she married George Ver Velde in Oostburg. He preceded her in death on April 3, 2000. Dorothy worked at Lake Church Shoe Factory, Bemis, and Tecumseh for 16 years before retiring in 1984. She was a member of First Reformed Church in Oostburg, the Young at Heart and the American Legion Auxiliary. Dorothy enjoyed biking, playing organ, piano, harmonica; sewing, knitting, and spending time at her winter home in Sun City Arizona. While living in Sun City she attended Good Fellowship Church where she sang in the choir and was a part of a harmonica band. Dorothy was always eager to help her family or anyone else in need. Survivors include two daughters, Donna (Robert) Caljouw of Oostburg, Mary Klug of Oostburg; two sons, Allan (Althea) VerVelde and Richard (Shirley) VerVelde, both of Oostburg; 12 grandchildren, Wendy (Jim) Wonser, Debbie (Dave) Chapman, Tammy (Chris) Peterson, Kari (Mark) Martinez, Kathy (Jeff) Krueger, Sarah Klug, Kay (Joel) DePagter, Sandy (Brian) Ten Haken, Don (Jill) VerVelde, Carl (Tina) VerVelde, Sherri (Dirk) Roerdink, Brett (Lisa) VerVelde; 23 great grandchildren; one brother, Gene (Elaine) Soerens of Meadowview Manor; and one sister-in-law, Lois (Sam) Brill of Oostburg.. She was preceded in death by her husband, two brothers, Earl and Leon Soerens, and a son-in-law, David Klug. Funeral services will be held on Monday, March 19, 2007 at Noon at the First Reformed Church in Oostburg, with the Rev. Wayne DeVrou, pastor, officiating. A family service will precede at 11:45 am in the fellowship hall. Entombment will take place at Sunrise Memorial Gardens. Friends may call at the Wenig Funeral Home in Oostburg on Sunday from 1-5 pm; and on Monday, at church from 10:30 am until the time of service at Noon.
