Carlyle Driest

Carlyle G. Van Driest, 74, of N1080 Sauk Trail Road, Cedar Grove died early on Sunday morning, February 7, 2010, with his family at his side. Carlyle resided at Sheboygan Progressive Care Center in Sheboygan where he had resided since December after suffering complications from a fall. Carlyle was born on July 7, 1935, in Sheboygan, son of the late Cornelius and Mildred (Bruggink) Van Driest. He was a 1953 graduate of Cedar Grove High School. On November 29, 1962, he married Peggy Duveneck in Manitowoc. Carlyle was employed as an assessor for the State of Wisconsin Dept of Revenue for 44 years before his retirement in 2006. He was also an appraiser, realtor and worked as an insurance agent for Rural Insurance Co. Following his father's death he operated Van Driest Hatchery and was a cash crop farmer. Carlyle was a lifelong member of the First Presbyterian Church in Oostburg, where he was a longtime Sunday School teacher, and served as a deacon and trustee. Carlyle was a member of the Oostburg Cemetery Assoc., Wisconsin Towns Assoc, and the Sheboygan County Historical Society. He enjoyed ballroom dancing, dance rollerskating, bowling, golf, coin collecting, playing sheepshead, cutting wood, yardwork and spending time outdoors. He also liked old tractors and attending car shows. He and Peggy enjoyed time driving and caring for their Corvette. Carlyle was an avid Wisconsin Badger football and basketball fan. Survivors include his wife, Peggy; two daughters, Polly (Paul) Schroeder of Ripon, and Penny (Corey) Norlander of Sheboygan; two sons, Tim Van Driest of Marengo, IL and Thad Van Driest of Plymouth; seven grandchildren, Zachary, Alexandria, and Samuel Schroeder, Jacob, Levi, Benjamin and Isaiah Norlander; one daughter-in-law, Debra Van Driest of Poplar Grove, IL; a sister-in-law, Carolyn Van Driest of Oostburg; and a longtime friend and co-worker, Harold Eichstadt of Oshkosh. Carlyle was preceded in death by his parents; an infant son, Bret Van Driest; and his brother, Wayne Van Driest. Funeral services will be held on Wednesday February 10, 2010 at 1:00 pm at the First Presbyterian Church in Oostburg with the Rev. Walter Hackney officiating. Burial will take place at Oostburg Cemetery in the Town of Holland. Friends may call at the church on Wednesday from 10:00 am until the time of the service. In lieu of flowers, a memorial fund has been established in Carlyle's name for the First Presbyterian Church in Oostburg.
