Betty Altwies, 88, of Sheboygan, was called home by her Lord and Savior on Friday April 6th, at the home of her daughter, with her family at her side. She was born on July 12, 1923, in Milwaukee, WI, to the late John M. and Martha Rosquist Horton. She graduated from West Allis Central High School in 1941. She married James E. Altwies on March 4, 1944, and they celebrated 66 years of marriage before James preceded her in death in 2010. Betty was a devoted wife and mother, staying at home to raise her five children. After the children were older, she worked at various jobs until her retirement. She always had unconditional love for her children, and never failed to welcome their friends into their home. She always found something good about everyone and everything. Negative thoughts and words were not a part of who she was. She was a member of TOPS Club for many years, and made many good friends there. Betty had a saving knowledge of Jesus Christ as her Lord and Savior. She had an assurance of going to heaven, and was looking forward to meeting her Lord and family members that went before her as her health began to fail. She was a member of Southside Alliance Church, where she faithfully attended adult Sunday school and worship. Her family and friends will miss her greatly, but will cherish the memories of her life and the legacy she leaves. Betty is survived by her children Martha (Gary) Miller, of Sheboygan, Linda (Oscar Taylor) White of Adell, Janice (Dan) Gore, of Wausau, John (Bonnie) Altwies, of Sheboygan, and Peter Altwies of New Holstein, 10 grandchildren, 16 great grandchildren, and two great great grandsons; sisters-in law, Julia Elaine Graves, of Scottsdale, AZ, and Helen Altwies, of Waukesha, and numerous nieces and nephews. In addition to her husband, Betty was preceded in death by her brother, John Horton, and one granddaughter, Sarah Gore. Per Betty's wishes, her body has been donated to the Medical College of Wisconsin. There will be a time of visitation on Tuesday, April 10th from 6 to 8 p.m., and again on Wednesday, April 11th, from 10 a.m. to noon at Southside Alliance Church, 4321 Cty. Hwy. A. A memorial service to celebrate Betty's life will follow at the church Wednesday at noon with Pastor Chris McKinster officiating. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in her memory to Southside Alliance Church and will be used for a youth outreach baseball diamond. The family wishes to thank the staff of Harmony Assisted Living, Sheboygan Progressive Care, and St. Nicholas Hospice for their care for Betty.
