Bert Joling

March 17, 1924 — June 24, 2015

Bertus John Joling, 91 of Rhinelander, left this world for his heavenly home late Wednesday, June 24 at St. Joseph Medical Center in Kansas City, Missouri. Born in Wood County on March 17, 1924, Bert was the son of the late William and Alena (Holstein) Joling. He grew up in the Wisconsin Rapids area, then entered the army September 21, 1943 to serve in World War II. After his discharge on May 6, 1946, he married Bonita Jane Neerhof on August 23, 1946. They spent the next 65 years serving the Lord together until her death in 2012. In 1946 Bert was hired by Wisconsin Public Service in Sheboygan, where he worked until moving in 1962 to help bring natural gas to Rhinelander. He retired 1986. Bert was a member of Calvary Baptist Church. He was active in all phases of the church, and served as a Deacon, Sunday School teacher, and choir member. Bert was also instrumental in the establishment of Headwaters Christian Youth and was a member of the Gideons and Christian Business Men's Committee. Bert's love for the outdoors made Rhinelander an ideal location for him. He loved fishing, hunting, and gardening, and it was not unusual to find him soaking a minnow off his peer at dusk or taking rides to scout out new fishing and hunting spots. He was preceded in death by Bonnie, his parents, her parents, Herbert and Emmeline (Nyhof) Neerhof, and his brother Henry. Survivors include three children, Sharon (Paul) Wieduwilt of Kansas City, Missouri, David Joling of Eau Claire, and Daniel (Susan) Joling of Anchorage, Alaska; six grandchildren: Jamie (Venus) Wieduwilt, Christy (Shannon) Henry, Jeremy (Kim) Wieduwilt, Alena Joling, Henry Joling, and Samuel Joling; and 5 great-grandchildren. Services will be held at Wenig Funeral home in Oostburg, Tuesday, June 30, at 11am. Relatives and friends may gather from 10am until the time of service am 11am. Burial will follow at Hingham Cemetary. A memorial service will be held at 6:30 p.m. on Wednesday, July 1 at Calvary Baptist Church, Rhinelander.
