Alice (O'Leary) McCabe, 80, resident of Oostburg, WI, passed away peacefully at Froedtert Hospital in Milwaukee on May 2, 2016, surrounded by her family. Alice was born in Madison, WI on March 31, 1936, to Angeline (Valentine) and Henry J. O'Leary. She grew up with three brothers: Michael, James, and Richard O'Leary. She attended Catholic schools in the Middleton and Madison areas and graduated from Edgewood High School in the class of 1954. This is where she met the love of her life, Donovan McCabe. Before they were married, Alice completed Nursing School at Marquette, graduating in 1958. She spread her healing touch around Platteville, WI and Hillsboro, WI, before finally settling at St. Nicholas Hospital in Sheboygan, WI as a nurse for nine years. Alice continued her nursing career as Director of the Visiting Nurses Association for Sheboygan County from 1972-1989, and finally as a Nursing Supervisor at Sunny Ridge Nursing Home. She eventually retired in 2001, where she continued on her last and most important nursing job - caring for her husband Don, until his passing in 2011. Alice and Don were married at St. Patrick's Catholic Church in Madison on January 24, 1959. They settled in Oostburg, WI in 1963, where their 52 year marriage would include a family of 6 children, 12 grandchildren, and 2 great grandchildren. She is survived by a daughter, Debbie (Steve) Jones of Sheboygan and their son, Brian; a son, Dr. Timothy (Kathy) McCabe PhD. of Doylestown, PA, and their daughters, Kaila and Emily; a daughter, Lori McCabe of Oostburg; a son, Michael McCabe of Sheboygan and his daughters, Ashley Smith, Amanda, and Elyse (Nicholas) Lefter; a daughter, Sandi Gottsacker of Sheboygan and her children, Vickie, Robert and Daniel; a son, Jon McCabe of Madison and his sons, Michael, Alexander and Benjamin; and two very cherished (and spoiled) great grandchildren Carter and Jaxon. She is also survived by three brothers, Michael (Martha) O'Leary of Madison, James (Dawn) O'Leary of Michigan, and Richard (Barbara) O'Leary of Fond du Lac; one sister-in-law, Marlyce Putnam of St. Paul, MN; and a brother-in-law, Ron McCabe of Madison. She was preceded in death by her husband, Donovan; her parents, Henry and Angeline O'Leary; her parents-in-law, Edwin McCabe and Hazel Jacobson; and her son-in-law Thomas Gottsacker. Alice enjoyed many activities such as pending time with her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren, cooking, gardening, reading, camping, volunteering, enjoying the birds in her neighborhood, staying involved in her church, and her cats. Alice was a deeply religious woman that embodied Christ's commandment to "Love thy neighbor." The McCabe household was always filled with delicious smells, neighborhood friends/children, and lots of laughter. The kitchen truly was the heart of her home. As a proud Italian woman, Alice believed that everything could be made better by a warm hug and a hot meal. If you were hungry, she fed you; if you were tired, she fed you then put you to bed; if you were sad, she hugged then she fed you. She spread joy to others by giving of herself. Whether it was vegetables from her garden, fresh baked cookies from the oven, or homemade Christmas candies, Alice always had enough to share; there was always room for one more. A Mass of Christian Burial to celebrate Alice's life will be held at 2 pm on Saturday, May 7, 2016 at St. Peter Claver Catholic Parish in Sheboygan with the Rev. Paul Fliss officiating. Burial will take place at Holy Cross Cemetery in Sheboygan. The funeral will be casual dress. Be sure to come hungry, for you will be fed. Relatives and friends may gather at the Wenig Funeral Home in Oostburg on Friday, May 6, 2016 from 4-7 pm, and on Saturday at church from Noon until the time of the Mass at 2 pm.
