Gary W. Ten Haken, 63, of Cedar Grove, went home to his Heavenly Father while surrounded by his loving family early Sunday morning, November 4, 2012, at the Sharon S. Richardson Community Hospice Center in Sheboygan Falls where he had resided for the past three weeks. Gary was born on April 5, 1949, in Sheboygan, the son of the late Clarence and Lois (Obbink) Ten Haken. Gary graduated from Cedar Grove High School in 1967. Gary served in the US Navy during the Viet Nam Conflict from 1969-71. He married Pam Teunissen in Cedar Grove on September 14, 1974. Gary worked as a mechanic for Wagner Excavating Co. for the past five years until his retirement in 2011. Previously, he worked at Dean's Foods and other companies, also doing mechanic work. He was a member of the First Reformed Church in Cedar Grove where he served as a deacon. He was an active volunteer at the Cedar Grove Fire Dept., serving as chief from 1989-97. Gary was also secretary for the Sheboygan County Fire Assoc. and was instrumental in the establishment of the Survive Alive House. He was a former member of the American Legion in Cedar Grove. Gary enjoyed, fishing, bicycling, model airplanes, building projects, woodworking, playing cribbage, coin collecting and weekend road trips with his wife. Gary is survived by his wife, Pam of Cedar Grove; two daughters, Teresa (Paul) Beardsley of Hingham and Penny (Brad) Downing of Bettendorf, Iowa; one son, Jeff (Amy) Ten Haken of New London; six grandchildren, Granite and Regan Beardsley, Grace and Kaitlyn Downing, Logan and Brooklynn Ten Haken; three sisters-in-law, Jackie (Paul) Huenink, Vicky (Ken) Haanpaa of Ironwood, MI, and Bonnie (Bill) Depies of Cedar Grove; five brothers-in-law, Roy (Gloria), Don (LuAnn) Teunissen, both of Cedar Grove; Clifford (Barb) and David Teunissen, of Oostburg; and Henry Teunissen, of Minnesota. Gary is also survived by nieces, nephews, other relatives and many friends. Gary was preceded in death by his parents, one sister, Karen (LaMont) Bruggink; one brother, Elwood (Jane) Ten Haken; and his parents-in-law, Eugene and Virginia Teunissen. A funeral to celebrate Gary's life will take place at 11 am on Thursday, November 8, 2012, to be held at the First Reformed Church in Cedar Grove with the Rev. Kent Vant Hul officiating. Military Honors and burial will follow at the Cedar Grove Cemetery. Family and friends will gather at the Wenig Funeral Home in Oostburg on Wednesday, November 7, 2012, from 4-8 pm, and on Thursday, at church, from 10 am until the time of the service at 11 am. A memorial fund is being established in his memory for the Sheboygan County Cancer Care Fund and the Cedar Grove Fire Dept. The staff of the Wenig Funeral Home in Oostburg (920-564-2771) is serving the Ten Haken family.
